Journeyman Lineman Employment Opportunity

The City of Caliente is accepting applications for a journeyman lineman to support our electrical distribution system. Caliente provides well maintained equipment and tools in a system that has been actively maintained. Caliente is a city in rural Nevada located along U.S. 93 within access to Las Vegas, Nevada and St George, Utah. Our goal is to offer secure employment with a small-town atmosphere maintaining approximately 600 meters. The city provides an excellent insurance plan and P.E.R.S retirement to full time employees, as well as a comprehensive vacation and sick leave plan, including 11 paid holidays.

DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of the City Public Works Manager. Duties include the construction and maintenance of the city power transmission, distribution and substation within the City limits.

Examples of Duties

  1. Competent in framing and erecting overhead and underground lines and structures.
  2. Competent in stringing conductors.
  3. Competent in setting poles.
  4. Competent in placing rubber and fiber covering on lines.
  5. Competent with installing transformers, capacitors, line switches and other related line materials.
  6. Competent with industry rigging practices.
  7. Competent in installation of conduit, pulling and terminating underground high and low voltage wire cable.
  8. Competent with safe equipment set up and grounding procedures.
  9. Competent with glove work on live high voltage distribution power lines.
  10. Competent with servicing street lights.
  11. Capable of making up and using a hand line.
  12. Dig trenches, operate backhoes, boom trucks, trenchers, etc. while maintaining a safe and clean work area.
  13. Able to respond to after-hours trouble shooting and maintenance of lines in all weather conditions.
  14. Performs minor maintenance on company vehicles, checks oil and tires, washes vehicles.
  15. Makes certain proper equipment is on the trucks and maintained properly.
  16. Support all other departments within the City as directed.
  17. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  18. Exhibit and practice a pleasant, cooperative, and productive work environment.
  19. Participate and provide feedback on improvements to procedures.
  20. Practice a safe working culture.

QUALIFICATIONS

The degree of knowledge and ability as outlined under this section is that which is necessary to satisfactory perform the essential functions of this position.

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience: 1 year as a journeyman lineman
Training: Graduate from an accredited lineman apprenticeship or trade school
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Residency Requirement:

  • Applicant must be willing to reside within the City of Caliente limits.
  • Applicant must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes from the time of dispatch

Knowledge of:

  • Basic hand and power tools
  • Basic math skills including algebra and associated trade math
  • Basic construction methods and practice associated with municipal power systems
  • Basic high and low voltage applications

Ability to:

  • Safely operate vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain accurate records of labor hours
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Prioritize projects and work on several assignments simultaneously
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those in the course of work
  • Perform essential functions of the job
  • Respond to emergencies when called
  • Obtain a Nevada State Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) within 6 months.
